His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh welcomes Gold DofE Award holders to Buckingham Palace Garden. The ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Friday was the first of four events for gold award winners and their guests, which will see more than 8,000 young people celebrated in the palace gardens over the course of two days.

Former student, Thomas Watts, and Mrs Gilbert were both invited to the celebration event on Friday 10 May. Tom was receiving his Gold Award and Mrs Gilbert for 20 years of service to the award. To achieve a gold Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) award, participants must complete 12 months of volunteering, a four-day expedition, and various physical, skill-based and residential challenges.

They both had a wonderful afternoon listening to speeches from the Duke of Edinburgh, Broadcaster Clive Myrie, Rugby player, Alun Wyn Jones OBE and several other inspirational speakers. The pair were also lucky enough to meet the Duke of Edinburgh himself!

Congratulations to both, an amazing achievement!
