Senior XV Rugby v Corbet School – 23.11.23
The re-match against Corbet School was never going to be an easy fixture. Having beaten them on their home turf earlier in the season, which was a close match, Corbet turned up looking for retribution and a win on our home turf.
We had a full team with two subs, so were feeling confident, but realised that we had an uphill task if we wanted the win. The boys had their orders and Ollie did a fantastic job of bolstering the boys and setting out his stall in terms of what he wanted to see from both the fronts and backs. Corbet kicked and we received, as before in the earlier game, the commitment from the boys was outstanding. Constantly fighting each ruck, turning over several balls, and strong pushing in the scrums.
The first score came from Corbet, with a penalty and a kick between the posts. We countered with a great try from Harrison S, with a conversion from Harrison M. Zach then went over the line for a second try, but it was right in the corner, so Harrison failed the conversion. Within minutes we saw Harrison, out of position as full back, drifting forward and scoring, with the boys making full use of the width of the pitch. He then converted his own try.
After half time, the physicality of the game began to show and the boys lost some formation, however, they defended valiantly and Corbet got a try but failed to convert. We had several attempts and spent a lot of time in the final 22, but failed to convert them into tries. In the final dying minutes, Harry B, who had a fantastic game, put the ball down between the posts and Harrison then converted. Final score was 26-8.
Special mention goes to Ollie for his pick and go’s, which transformed our game. Teddy and Russ for their commitment and ball carry and the rest of the team for their hard work and never giving in. We now move on to our cup games, which will be harder matches against some larger schools. So more practice moving forward.
Well done boys on a great game.
